![]() ![]() But it may be a while until we see anything other than patches for the series.įollow me on Twitter and on Facebook. I’m still holding out hope for an expansion someday, even a small one, and of course, Diablo 4 down the line. It’s uncertain what the future holds for Diablo 3, though this news would explain the relative silence we’ve seen about new expansion content for the past two years now. Obviously, when developing something of this scale, there are a lot of moving pieces and much going on behind the scenes, so it's hard to know what the full story is here. It seems like the resources and desire should be there for something like this, but perhaps I'm being naïve. ![]() Specifically, if the game is more profitable in Asia, wouldn’t developing an expansion for release there encourage players to spend more on the game through those microtransactions as they're re-engaged? And in the west, are we really at a point where a game needs an innate “revenue stream” other than millions of people potentially purchasing $20-40 DLC? That still doesn’t quite add up to me. While I understand that Diablo 3 lacks a consistent revenue stream in the west, it remains unclear to me why that’s an insurmountable barrier to new content. It always did seems strange that Blizzard was rolling out new maps and tilesets for free, when that easily could have been saved for an expansion, but if they were part of a cut expansion (The King in the North/Ruins of Sescheron connection seems pretty obvious) that makes a lot more sense. The information I received does seem to be a little bit old, so it’s possible Blizzard’s plans could have changed since, and maybe something is being worked on now, but it’s hard to say. Between these official and unofficial bullet points, it does seem like Diablo 3 is shifting into maintenance mode with continued patch support, some of which may even contain other would-be expansion content, but it’s likely no actual expansion is on the way. ![]()
